Billy Turner joins forces with label boss Skream to deliver their collaborative ‘Chronicles’ EP, closing off another successful year for the Of Unsound Mind imprint
The final release of what has been an incredible 2017 for the Of Unsound Mind label see’s Skream team up with one of the imprints brightest talents, Billy Turner. The ‘Chronicles‘ EP consists of dark and menacing, trance-flavoured techno from the UK duo. Before digging into the release we’d like to focus on the successes of the Of Unsound Mind label since its’ inception back in 2014. Initially, Oliver Jones closed off Disfigured Dubz in 2013 and saw this opportunity as a way to undertake his vision of bringing attention to “artists [he] feels people need to know about” .
In the short years of activity, Of Unsound Mind is quickly approaching its’ 50th release with an inclusion of 36 artists participating so far. The musical diversity from the producers involved epitomises and consolidates Jones’ vision perfectly; being inclusive of dark and esoteric music right through to the emotive, more melodic spheres of the underground. Skream has always been a strong advocate for supporting new talent and as the label has grown, we’ve seen this come to fruition. The likes of Eli Brown, Kincaid, Sinal, James Burton and of course, Billy Turner have all been handed the perfect platform to express their sound.
After having his debut EP signed, Eli Brown explained..
“I feel very lucky that Olly took a punt and signed my debut EP about this time last year, it really helped kick start my career. I expect a whole lot more from the label over the next 12 months as Olly and Of Unsound Mind are on a roll”
Sinal has been involved with two releases on the label in joint efforts alongside production partner Kincald and he expressed the following..
“In my eyes, Olly has set the benchmark of how a label should interact with it’s artists. His passion for OUM and the music it releases resonates through his support and his willingness to help open doors for his artists. He says it as he is and always follows through on his word, which can be rare in this industry”
Last December the imprint was handed the ‘Label of the Year’ for 2016 by Data Transmission and with the continued ambition to release boundary pushing music in 2017, we wouldn’t be surprised to see similar accolades presented to the label again. With the project moving into its’ fifth year Skream was buoyant, telling us he’s “Over the moon with how the label has progressed over 2017 and I’m even more excited for 2018” further detailing that the Of Unsound Mind collective has “something very special up [their] sleeves for the 50th release!”.
The ‘Chronicles’ EP (Out December 15th)
This weeks’ huge release from Billy Turner and Skream is a four track, emotive-walloper that delves into the depths of meticulous techno and in many ways encompasses the original mission statement of the label. ‘Medusa‘ is a high-pressured, tense affair exhibiting a frenzy of lively synth-action. ‘Leviathan‘ opts to take a darker, more sinister direction; think dimmed street lights, a coldness to the night and anguish in the air. ‘Evolver‘ is the result of carefully executed interplay between convulsing pads and gentle bass tones. The final piece to the puzzle is Billy’s remix of Skream’s ‘Settled‘, an emotional roller with an archaic-undertone presenting ravenous claps and snares; a remix that leaves the listener in awe with its’ cinematic-like attributes. The final words on both the label and the ‘Chronicles‘ EP come from Billy Turner..
“Olly’s shown me nothing but love since the very first track I sent him. I think we vibe very well creatively, so the ‘Chronicles’ EP fell into place nicely, and with no pressure”
